Are you wondering when and how to move your toddler from a cot to a 'big' bed?

Our moms give their advice. It can be challenging convincing them to stay put in their bed, once they realise they can get out of it freely. But with a little gentle persuasion and persistence, you can get bedtime back on track and they will hopefully be sleeping soundly in their new beds in no time.

  • When is the right time to move from cot to bed? There is no 'right' time to make the transition, but most children make the move sometime between 18 months and three and a half years. A tell-tale sign that your child is ready is when they try to climb or jump out of their cot. By moving them to a bed, you won't have to worry about your child hurting themselves trying to escape the cot.

How to make the change Moving from cot to bed is a big milestone for you and your toddler, and it should be celebrated. You could make it a special occasion by throwing a 'big bed' party — inviting all the local teddy bears for a sleepover! Making the changeover fun and exciting should help you reduce and soothe any anxieties your child might have about the move. Every child is different.

Some children will adjust easily, while others will take longer. Second-born, or subsequent, children may find it easier to make the move as they want to be the same as their older sibling, sleeping in their own bed. In some cases, you may not need to make a special effort at all. Some children just naturally feel like they are ready to make the move.

No matter how prepared your child is to move to a bed, you should ensure that you put up a guard rail to prevent your child from rolling out. Can you help this mom?

Hi, my little man will be 3 next month and is still very happy in his cot, but I think it's time for him to get into a big boys bed. Just wondering what you think?

  • I don't know whether to get him a little character toddler bed or a big bed. All advice would be great. As usual, our eumom community came back with some fantastic tips and advice. Here is a selection to help other moms wondering about the same issue.

Advice from our moms: It will last and you can get a character duvet cover and pillow case. I put my girls straight into a big bed.

My first was 2 and my second was 18 months. We just moved him straight from cot to bed. I think that toddler beds just make the whole process unnecessarily longer.

    Big bed for sure.

The age I recommend to move a child to a toddler bed is 3 years old. In addition, even if your child does understand that they are to stay put in bed, before this age they lack the impulse control to actually follow through and stay in bed.

You'll get years of use out of it. Let him chose his new duvet set.

  • I moved my little boy at age 3 to a big bed and let him chose all the accessories. I put a bed rail on it and we had no problems. I had to move my month-old into bed as she was climbing out of the cot. No one in the house has slept a night since! I'm lucky that he doesn't jump out of the bed, but he just loves his Disney duvet. Plus, it was made of wood so it lots of hard parts sticking out — perfect for hitting little knees and heads off.

Go straight for a single or double bed and you can accessorise the room with character-themed bedding and light shade. Do you have any advice for our moms? We would love to hear it, so please feel free to leave a comment below. About the Author Formerly the editor of eumom.
